Feature — Thoughts Words Action reviews In Plain Sight

Thoughts Words Action · Review by Djordje Miladinović · 8 November 2020

Thoughts Words Action, a music blog otherwise focused on punk and alternative, reviewed In Plain Sight in November 2020, two years after its release on PDV Records. The review frames Jan as a constant of the Croatian electronic scene — DJ, radio DJ, producer, live performer, promoter and label owner for over two decades — and traces the album to his 2016 meeting with French keyboardist Regis Kattie.

What the review covers

The review walks through the album's six house compositions: the live recordings You Never Told Me Pts. 1 & 2 (Galerija Cvajner, Pula) and G's Cycle Encore Cut 01 (Pločnik, Zagreb), alongside Florette, How Quentin Lost His Jazz, Blue Funk and How Quentin Got His Jazz Back. It also maps the release's orbit — the Florette Versions EP with remixes by Luka Veselinović, LaSeech and Matija Duić, and Blue Funk's later remixes by Javonntte and Janko Novoselic — and dwells on the interplay of Kattie's keyboards, double-bass lines and electronic rhythm sections.

What the reviewer said

“This particular collection captures the essence of engaging jazz improvisations, empowered by calmy electronic beats.”

“This album also proves that Jan Kinčl is a brilliant producer who deserves the uttermost attention of the electronic music community.”
