Interview — miss7: Detroit techno, the Zero Show and Jeff Mills
An interview for miss7, published in March 2015, when Jan was still playing as Zero and had been running the Zero Show on Radio 808 for a little over three years. It starts with the Detroit techno paper he wrote at school and ends with what was, at the time, a wave of new clubs opening in Zagreb.
What the interview covers
The school paper on Detroit techno and how a music teacher was talked into accepting it. How the radio show found listeners abroad — no strategy, a lot of direct emails, and the point at which he stopped thinking about what he ought to be doing. The gap between the weekend a DJ is seen at and the working week nobody sees. Why every field that gets hot for a while fills up with people who stop at a surface understanding, and why he thinks that sorts itself out. And the DJ booths he has shared, Jeff Mills five or six times among them.
