Feature — Zagreb night life in Index.hr

Index.hr · Feature by Boris Abramović · 25 April 2025

In April 2025 Index.hr published “Postoji li više noćni život u Zagrebu?” (“Does night life still exist in Zagreb?”), a feature by Boris Abramović on the state of the city’s club scene after the pandemic. Jan Kinčl is one of the two main voices, alongside promoter Adnan Mehmedović Medo — the piece introduces him as a producer and DJ who, when not working with international names, is one of the most recognisable faces of the Zagreb club scene.

What the piece covers

Against the backdrop of Zagreb’s new night economy project, Jan describes the disappearance of the small, independent, alternative venues that used to be hotspots of night life, and the sameness of the programming at those that remain; he recalls the variety of the Brazil na Savi, SKUC Pauk, KSET and Točkica era while noting, on the positive side, young acts now filling Dom sportova. He also discusses why fewer young people attend house and techno events, why nights start earlier than they used to, and his concern that digital saturation is killing the atmosphere at many events.

In his words

“Music is for people. It is a medium of interaction. DJs know that. When you watch it on a screen — you are not there.”

“Night life is a social shortcut — it erases every hierarchy. At work and at school you know who is who; out at night you don’t. Everyone is equal.”
