Just before the summer, I got approached by Croatia Records with an idea to remix 'Kud Plovi Ovaj Brod', a legendary 1970 chanson classic by Miss Radojka Šverko, with music originally written by Esad Arnautalić and words by the great Arsen Dedić. This year the song is celebrating its 50th birthday and this special edition EP was put together to mark the occasion. The release features several incarnations of the song, released throughout the years, and two new which I'm honored to be a part of.
When tackling a classic; respecting the original or flipping it into something new is a tough choice. I had a good team - Zvonimir Bajević, Igor Fabris, Mr Dirty Hairy and Arsen Ereš, and instead of choosing between the two, we explored both approaches in parallel.
With "Interpretation", we took a live concert recording from 2018 (arranged by Vladimir Babin) and, in a very traditional manner, scored new parts to dress it differently. Strings, brass section and flute were recorded and added to the original performance consisting of voice, piano, double bass and drums. I am particularly fond of the solo part in the middle, which formed the basis of the dub version.
With "Dub", we wanted to place the song into a very different context. We took the freedom of dismantling everything we did on the first version, and turned it into a hip hop downtempo instrumental. Hopefully, you'll enjoy them both.
Happy anniversary to Miss Šverko, and thanks to Ana Hotko and Nikola Knežević for including us in the project. At this point, the EP is out on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Deezer or wherever you get your music from.
